Ministry of Law, Releases Draft of the Advocates (Amendment) Bill 2025– Key Proposed Changes


The Ministry of Law has released the draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeking to bring Indian legal practice and education up to global standards. Public opinions have been invited on the proposed amendments.


The bill proposes several amendments to the Advocates Act, 1961, aiming to enhance legal education, equip lawyers to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world, and uphold professional standards. The objective is to ensure that the legal profession contributes effectively to a just, equitable society and a developed nation.

Key Amendments in the Draft Bill

🔹 Government-Nominated Members in BCI:

Amendments to Section 4 of the Advocates Act propose three government-nominated members in the Bar Council of India, including two women lawyers.


🔹 Ban on Strikes & Boycotts:

A new Section 35-A will prohibit lawyers from calling for or participating in strikes that disrupt judicial proceedings. Violations will be treated as professional misconduct, leading to disciplinary action.


🔹 Committee to Handle Strikes & Boycotts:

A new Section 9-B proposes the establishment of a Special Public Grievance Redressal Committee under the Bar Council of India to handle complaints related to lawyer strikes and boycotts.
